Is Jesus Your Savior?
Why is this an important question? Because trusting Jesus as your savior is the way we receive peace with God now and eternal life in God’s presence (in Heaven) when our lives end. Doing good works and attending church are good things to do, but they cannot save us. We are saved only by faith in Jesus Christ.
What do we need to be saved from?
All of us have done things outside of God’s will. The Bible calls this sin and tells us that our sin separates us from Holy God, who is the Creator of heaven and earth and each of us. Eternal separation from God is eternal death. We need to be saved from these consequences of sin. Here are a few Bible verses.
- “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
- “But your iniquities have separated you from your God;” (Isaiah 59:2)
- “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
God provided the means for our salvation
God loves us so much that He provided the means for us to be saved. He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus, to become human like us, pay the cost of our sin by dying on a cross, then defeat death by rising from the grave. We are saved by believing and accepting Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf and His resurrection from death to life.
- “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
- “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
- “Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many;” (Hebrews 9:27-28a)
- “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:21)
- “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you,” (1 Peter 1:3-4)
How do I receive Jesus Christ as my Savior?
You receive Jesus Christ as your Savior by trusting Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins through His sacrificial death and resurrection. Receive Him by saying a prayer like this:
Dear God, I know I have sinned. I believe that your Son, Jesus, died for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn away from my sins and I receive Jesus as my Savior and Lord. Thank you for forgiving me and saving me today. Amen.
If you sincerely prayed this prayer, you are now saved.
Saved by Faith
Our salvation is established by faith in Jesus Christ. We may not always feel saved, but faith (not feelings) establishes our salvation. The following verses affirm God’s forgiveness and acceptance of us.
- “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” (Romans 10:9-10)
- “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)
- “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.” (John 5:24)
What Next?
- Tell a Christian friend or a pastor about your decision to trust in Jesus.
- Ask God to help you find a Bible-believing church fellowship where you can learn and grow in your new life with God
- Be baptized
- Pray and read your Bible daily
It is our prayer that you know how deeply God loves you, that you trust Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins, and that you experience the abundant life God wants for you. God’s blessings to you!
